The main industry leaders such as Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA each have internationally acknowledged skills programmes. These big-hitters will give some sparkle to your CV.

If your advisor doesn’t dig around with lots of question – chances are they’re just a salesperson. If they push a particular product before understanding your background and experience, then you know it’s true.

Don’t forget, if you have some relevant qualifications that are related, then you can sometimes expect to begin at a different level to a student who’s starting from scratch.

If this is going to be your first effort at studying for an IT examination then you may want to begin with some basic Microsoft package and Windows skills first.

Considering the amount of options that are available, it’s not really surprising that nearly all trainees don’t really understand the best career path they will follow.

Perusing lists of IT career possibilities is no use whatsoever. Surely, most of us have no concept what our own family members do for a living – let alone understand the ins and outs of a particular IT career.

Contemplation on many issues is essential if you want to uncover a solution that suits you:

* Your personality can play a starring part – what things get your juices flowing, and what tasks really turn you off.

* Why you want to consider starting in computing – maybe you’d like to achieve a life-long goal like firing your boss and working for yourself maybe.

* Where do you stand on travelling time and locality vs salary?

* Learning what the main Information technology types and markets are – and what differentiates them.

* Having a good look at how much time and effort that you’re going to put into it.

The best way to avoid the confusing industry jargon, and uncover what’ll really work for you, have an informal chat with an experienced professional; a person who understands the commercial reality whilst covering each accreditation.

Look at the following facts and pay great regard to them if you believe the marketing blurb about a guarantee for your exam looks like a reason to buy:

You’re paying for it by some means. One thing’s for sure – it isn’t free – they’ve just worked it into the package price.

The honest truth is that when trainees fund their relevant examinations, one by one, they will be much more likely to get through on the first attempt – as they are conscious of the cost and will therefore apply themselves appropriately.

Don’t you think it’s more sensible to find the best exam deal or offer at the appropriate time, not to pay the fees marked up by the training company, and also to sit exams more locally – rather than in some remote centre?

Buying a course that includes payments for examination fees (plus interest – if you’re financing your study) is bad financial management. Why fill a company’s coffers with your money just to give them a good cash-flow! Some will be pinning their hopes on the fact that you will never make it to exams – then they’ll keep the extra money.

Many training companies will require you to sit pre-tests and prohibit you from re-taking an exam until you’ve demonstrated an excellent ability to pass – making an ‘exam guarantee’ just about worthless.

Spending hundreds or even thousands extra on an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is remiss – when consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software is what will really guarantee success.

Fathers’ Day – (third Sunday in June): was first celebrated in West Virginia in 1908, but this distinctively American holiday was not made official until 1972.

Flag Day – (June 14): was first celebrated in 1877, which was the centenary of the adoption of the modern design. Truman passed the Flag Day Bill in 1949.

Groundhog Day – (February 2): on this day the groundhog peeps out of his burrow. If he sees his own shadow there will be six weeks of Winter to follow, otherwise Spring is just around the corner.

Halloween – (October 31): All Hallow’s Eve is the day before the feast of All Saints. It began as a pagan custom honouring the dead and a celebration of Autumn. ‘Trick or Treat’ is purely American with no historical foundation.

Kwanzaa – is a secular celebration by African-Americans to commemorate their African heritage. It commences on Dec.26th when a candle in a candelabrum is lit every day for seven days. It was first observed by Maulana Karenga in 1966.

Mothers’ Day – (second Sunday in May): was thought of by Anne M. Jarvis of Philadelphia as a way for children to pay homage to their mothers. It received presidential proclamation in 1914.

National Maritime Day – (May 22): was proclaimed in 1935 to memorialize the SS Savannah’s first successful transatlantic crossing by a steamship in 1819. It is also a day of remembrance of merchant mariners who died in defense of their country.

National Teachers’ Day – (Tuesday of the first full week in May): is when pupils are meant to honour the teaching profession.

St. Patrick’s Day – (March 17): has been borrowed from Ireland where it is their national saint’s day.

St. Valentine’s Day – (February 14): was originally to honour two saints martyred by Emperor Claudius (214 – 270), but has been devoted to lovers since the Middle Ages.

Susan B. Anthony Day – (February 15): Anthony (1820 – 1906) worked for women’s rights and suffrage.

United Nations’ Day – (October 24): commemorates the endorsement of the UN Charter in 1945 by the then five permanent members of the Security Council.

Try to consider all the options with an advisor who is on familiar terms with the IT industry, and will help you select the most fruitful career to go with your personal characteristics.

Once you’ve decided on the job you’d like to get into, a suitable training program needs to be singled out that’s suits your current skills and aptitude. This should be personalised for your requirements.

We’d hazard a guess that you’re a practical sort of person – a ‘hands-on’ type. Typically, the unfortunate chore of reading reference guides is something you’ll make yourself do if you have to, but it’s not ideal. Consider interactive, multimedia study if learning from books is not your thing.

Long-term memory is enhanced when multiple senses are involved – this has been an accepted fact in expert circles for many years.

Modern training can now be done at home via self-contained CD or DVD materials. Instructor-led tutorials will mean you’ll learn your subject via their teaching and demonstrations. You can then test yourself by practicing and interacting with the software.

Make sure to obtain a demonstration of the study materials from the training company. The package should contain demo’s from instructors, slideshows and fully interactive skills-lab’s.

It is generally unwise to select online only courseware. With highly variable reliability and quality from the ISP (internet service provider) market, you should always obtain actual CD or DVD ROM’s.

Sometimes people presume that the state educational track is still the most effective. Why then are commercial certificates becoming more popular with employers?

Industry is now aware that for mastery of skill sets for commercial use, official accreditation from the likes of Microsoft, CISCO, Adobe and CompTIA is far more effective and specialised – for considerably less.

Many degrees, as a example, can often get caught up in too much background study – and a syllabus that’s too generalised. This prevents a student from getting enough core and in-depth understanding on a specific area.

In simple terms: Commercial IT certifications give employers exactly what they’re looking for – it says what you do in the title: i.e. I am a ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ in ‘Managing and Maintaining Windows Server 2003′. So companies can identify exactly what they need and which qualifications are required to fulfil that.

A fatal Faux-Pas that we encounter all too often is to focus entirely on getting a qualification, and not focus on the end result they want to achieve. Schools are brimming over with students that chose a program because it looked interesting – rather than what would get them the job they want.

It’s a terrible situation, but thousands of new students begin programs that seem fabulous from the syllabus guide, but which delivers a career that is of no interest at all. Try talking to typical university leavers for examples.

It’s well worth a long chat to see the expectations of your industry. Which exams they will want you to have and in what way you can gain some industry experience. It’s also worth spending time assessing how far you wish to go as it will often present a very specific set of accreditations.

Seek advice from an experienced industry professional, even if you have to pay a small fee – it’s much safer and cheaper to investigate at the start if you’ve chosen correctly, instead of discovering after 2 years that the job you’ve chosen is not for you and have to return to the start of another program.

The somewhat scary thought of securing your first computer related job is often made easier by some training providers because they offer a Job Placement Assistance facility. The honest truth is that it isn’t so complicated as you might think to land your first job – as long as you’ve got the necessary skills and qualifications; the shortage of IT personnel in Britain looks after that.

Having the possibility of an interview is more than not being known. A surprising amount of junior jobs are offered to people in the early stages of their course.

Actually, an independent and specialised local recruitment consultant or service (who will get paid by the employer when they’ve placed you) should get better results than any sector of a centralised training facility. It also stands to reason that they’ll know local industry and the area better.

Do ensure you don’t put hundreds of hours of effort into your studies, then call a halt and leave it in the hands of the gods to secure your first position. Stop procrastinating and get on with the job. Put as much energy and enthusiasm into securing a good job as you did to get trained.
