Laptops are currently the most popular model of consumer computer on the market. Though their smaller cousins, the netbooks, are gaining popularity, they are still not close to the sheer number of people buying laptops every year. There are a lot of reasons why desktops and netbooks will have a lot of trouble catching up.

As technology advances, these laptops will continue to gain popularity. It has gotten to the point that almost anyone can afford a portable computer like this without having to break the budget. As the price has come down, even on high-end technology, the popularity has continued to go up.

Many people could point out how desktops and netbooks are still cheaper than a lot of laptops, but this really comes down to a simple cost/benefit analysis. Netbooks, for example, may be cheaper than laptops, but they also don't have anywhere near the same processing power and functionality.

Desktop computers, one might then point out, have far more functionality - more processing, more memory, and more graphics - than a laptop that sells at the same price. This is all true, but it must be pointed out that these computers are locked into a single location. There is no mobile with desktops.

Laptops come in a full range of consumer models. In other words, if you are looking for a gaming machine, you can get a top-of-the-line model with some cutting edge graphics cards and processors, or you can save some money and get a cheaper model if you only plan to do your Web browsing and school work on it.

Laptops also give you the ability to take your productivity with you wherever you go. Whether you have to take your work on the road for your company, or you just want to relax and surf the net at a local hot spot, you can easily bring along one of these laptops so you can get all your work done.

You could, of course, use a netbook in these same circumstances, but due to the small keyboards and monitors, they can take a while to get used to. If you have some serious work to do (even if it is just work on your favorite social network) it can get really tedious on something so small.

Laptops don't show any sign of slowing down their growth rate. As manufacturers continue to develop their technologies and prices continue to come down, more and more people will take advantage of the chance to stay both productive and mobile.
